That makes him the first patriotic superhero in comics, debuting more than a year before Captain America! Novick's career had an impressive beginning, and he outlasted virtually all his peers, working on Batman and The Flash well into the 1980s. Thrill at the smashing origins of the Shield, that G-Man Extraordinary and the Wizard, the Man with the Super-Brain! The Shield was one of the first super-heroes with an American flag-themed costume, beating Captain America by 14 months.
